Okuu Keremet! Kyrgyzstan

The Okuu Keremet! project is a multi-year effort to improve the quality of instruction in elementary reading and language arts and mathematics in the Kyrgyz Republic. Brattle provided research, design, instructional development, and technical services in the collaborative development of 15 multi-lingual reading and language arts and mathematics teacher training modules, and student leveled readers.

Brattle Education:

  • Worked in partnership with RTI and local educators, subject matter experts, and officials to introduce new research-based instructional strategies to Kyrgyz teachers.
    • Collaborated on the planning of the professional development modules and training materials.
    • Researched, wrote, and edited mathematics and reading and language arts modules.
    • Designed and produced all print-ready pages, including all art specifications and image creation.
  • Created the instructional design and content for blended learning versions of the reading language arts training modules using Moodle as a development environment. Coordinated with RTI staff and local production vendors to create these hybrid courses that combined the content of the in-person modules with video and interactive activities to meet the professional development objectives.
  • Worked with RTI project staff and local writers and illustrators to develop a library of supplemental readers in Kyrgyz, Russian, Tajik and Uzbek languages intended to develop publishing capacity in the Kyrgyz Republic.
    • Collaborated on the development of a five-year publishing plan, that will ultimately produce approximately 1500 leveled children’s books in different grades, genres, topics, and languages.
    • Integrated internationally accepted publishing standards into the project process.
    • Evaluated industry publishing tools and guided the project team in the selection of SIL’s Bloom Library as the optimal development tool for the Kyrgyz setting.
    • Worked with RTI staff to create a development process that enhances the skills of Kyrgyz writers and illustrators and promotes the production of high-quality, diverse children’s books.
    • Developed training sessions with RTI staff and delivered them with RTI staff and local counterparts. Together we trained Kyrgyz writers and illustrators in overall book design standards, practices, and market expectations.
    • Empowered local authors and illustrators to serve as mentors in the Kyrgyz publishing community.
