Bumblecat Design & Illustration, LLC
Samuel Valentino, Sole Proprietor
Bumblecat Design & Illustration, LLC, has been working closely with Brattle for many years, creating a wide array of digital and traditional Illustration for various educational programs and book covers. We have provided marketing materials, content development, corporate rebranding, and even animated holiday cards, just to name a few.
Samuel Valentino, the sole proprietor of Bumblecat, has bachelor’s degrees in both illustration and history, both of which has helped him in his professional life. With over 20 years in publishing, a whole generation of schoolchildren across the globe have grown up learning from educational materials with Bumblecat illustrations! Much of the illustration is for PreK to 12, gracing the pages of many a textbook. Samuel is currently a content creator and writer for an online social studies program. Additionally, Samuel has written and illustrated multiple children’s books, published by Brattle. His Silver Rings won gold medals from both the Benjamin Franklin and Moonbeam awards.
True to his education, Samuel enjoys both art and reading. History and fantasy are preferred topics. Museum exhibits are always a favorite, as well as creating his own artwork in traditional media. When he steps away from his desk or computer, he practices Taekwondo.


Lauren Woodrow
Design/Production Manager
Lauren leads graphic design and production services for educational publishing projects, providing expertise across most content areas and levels (PreK-adult). Her thoughtful approach ensures targeted, intelligent visual solutions that succed both instructionally and economically. Additionally, Lauren manages artist and layout production teams for high-volume projects.
With more than 30 years of experience in educational product development, Lauren has worked with many national and industry-leading school publishers, as well as global clients. Lauren’s extensive background gives her an invaluable perspective for guiding clients on current best design and production practices. Lauren has a B.A. in Graphic Communication from Washington University in St. Louis.
Lauren loves the challenge of creating successful designs and considers this her biggest passion. She also enjoys word puzzles, trivia games, and spending time with her family.

Marzetta Alexander
Writer/Editor
In addition to assisting with mapping content and writing and editing text and lessons, Marzetta provides feedback from an ELA perspective on various aspects of product development.
Marzetta graduated from Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and the University of Florida with a Master of Fine Arts degree in Music Theory and Composition. Following 15 years in public education as a teacher and administrator, she entered the field of educational publishing as a writer of K-8 ELA text, instruction, and assessment for print and digital delivery. Her body of work includes numerous original passages and other text sources, including realistic and historical fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction. She has also created scope maps and managed the development of products designed to deliver research-based (systematic, explicit) instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, and comprehension, as well as fluency and vocabulary. A third focus of her experience has been extensive analysis and alignments of learning standards for both ELA and Social Studies products.
Marzetta enjoys performing and listening to music, reading fantasy and historical fiction novels, solving word puzzles, and chatting with people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives. She also likes spending lazy days outdoors in good weather with family and friends


Nancy O’Leary
Editorial Lead
Nancy joined Brattle as a freelance editor and writer in 2015. Past projects include ELA and Social Studies curricula, television scripts, and online activities. As Editorial Lead, she helps recruit and lead editorial teams and writes and edits content. Nancy also contributes to marketing strategies and new product development.
Nancy has worked in educational publishing for more than 30 years as a writer, editor, producer, and project manager. She earned a B.A. in American Literature from Middlebury College and an M.Ed. in Instructional Technology from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education.
Nancy’s absolute favorite pastime is reading, especially biographies and mystery novels. She enjoys traveling, hiking in the woods, doing jigsaw puzzles, watching British crime shows, and eating at quirky diners. Nancy lives outside Boston with her family and naughty rescue pup, Rigby.


Richard A. Lena
President and Publisher
Richard founded Brattle in 2009 to develop innovative educational products for global audiences. Richard works closely with Brattle’s clients and customers to establish long-term relationships and create product solutions that address their goals. He also works closely with Brattle’s directors and managers to assemble project teams and conduct industry research to place Brattle as a leader in the field.
Richard has a 30-year career in educational and publishing development holding several leadership positions such as Vice President of Instructional Solutions at InContext Publishing Partners, Director of Instructional Technology at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and Senior Director of Curriculum at the Classwell Learning Group. Richard holds a B.A. from Boston’s Suffolk University and a M.Ed. from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education.
Richard likes cycling, hiking, and baking. He enjoys podcasts about history, sci-fi, and true crime. His favorite reads are non-fiction, graphic novels, and mysteries. Richard loves spending time with his feline partner in crime, Pancake.


Mat Wolff
Director of Projects
Mat joined Brattle in 2021 as a project manager and was recently promoted to Director of Projects in 2023 to support Brattle’s growing project base, partners and contributors, and new product development.
Prior to working with Brattle, Mat served as the Associate Director of the Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and Architecture Center Houston. He spent a decade managing programs and projects that educated students, professionals, and the public about architecture and design. He holds a BFA in Sculpture from the University of Houston.
Mat keeps his undergrad skills sharp with creative practices like quilting and drawing. His favorite reads are graphic novels and short stories. Mat shares his South Philly rowhouse with the Marchesa Louisa, a once displaced chihuahua with a mysterious past.


Shirley V. Dickson
Consultant
Shirley specializes in instructional design, including sequencing instruction, scaffolding, and planned reviews. She also specializes in aligning curriculum with learning standards. Shirley writes reading, language arts, and mathematics curricula and assessments. She also develops professional development modules for effective instruction.
Shirley has a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics (University of California at Long Beach), Masters degree in special education (California Lutheran), and PH.D. in special education (University of Oregon). Before receiving her Ph. D., Shirley taught middle school mathematics and elementary school special education. After receiving her Ph. D., Shirley was an assistant professor (Northern Illinois University), Director of Reading and Language Arts, (Texas Education Agency), Director of Curriculum Initiatives (Texas Education Agency), and Program Director, Literacy (Education Commission of the States). She coauthored Portals to Reading (Houghton Mifflin, 2010) and National Geographic Theme Sets (2004, 2006). She has conducted research in reading and writing instruction for ages preschool through high school. She has written several book chapters and articles related to literacy.
Shirley enjoys gardening, cooking, reading, and spending time with family and friends. Her latest cooking venture is baking sourdough bread, trying to get the right balance of sour and texture.


Carol K. Karton
Director of Content Development
Carol has led Brattle's Content Development team since 2009. She works closely with the Editorial Leads and the Design and Program Manager to establish instructional objectives and ensure the content’s pedagogical efficacy. Carol is part of Brattle’s product development initiatives and works closely with clients to construct solutions that meet their learning and business objectives.

Carol has been involved in educational publishing for more than 30 years, serving as an editor of Reading and manager of outside services at ScottForesman (now Saavas), as Director of Marketing at PPFA, and as Executive Vice President at InContext, a full-service developer working with educational publishers across the country. She was also a middle-school teacher for several years. Carol holds a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan and an M.A. in English from Northwestern University. Â
Carol enjoys reading mysteries and historical fiction. She does the New York Times crossword puzzles daily (but not in ink). She also enjoys hiking, working out, and getting together with friends and family. She’s always up for a good adventure and has traveled to many international destinations.


Matt Christiansen
Math Editorial Lead
As an editorial lead, Matt works closely with clients and customers to develop and deliver high-quality products. Matt helps select, develop, and guide project teams throughout the development process.Â

Matt’s 20 years of experience in education and educational publishing help guide his day-to-day work. After completing a B.A. in Mathematics for Secondary Education from the University of Northern Colorado, Matt began his career as a high school math teacher in Colorado. He transitioned from the classroom into the district office to lead K-12 mathematics after earning an M.A. in Mathematics Teaching, also from UNC. Matt moved into educational publishing in roles such as Editorial Director at Cambium Learning Group, Director of Product Management at School Specialty, Department Head for Elementary Mathematics at Big Ideas Learning, and Senior Product Manager at Didax. He currently teaches in the Developmental Mathematics Program at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.Â

Matt enjoys spending time with his family at home and in the outdoors. He plays guitar and likes listening to many different musical styles and genres. He and his wife are parents to six children and one very active border collie.Â
